UPDATED, 1:30 p.m.: The second tropical depression of 2021 has formed off the Outer Banks. Other than a moderate risk of rip currents for the east-facing beaches from the state line to Buxton, no threat to land is anticipated.

The well-defined low pressure system located about 90 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras was acquiring tropical characteristics early this morning.

The system is moving away from the coast, and could become Tropical Storm Bill this evening. As it moves northeastward, it will hit colder waters south of Nova Scotia, ending any further development, the weather service said.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, with the National Hurricane Center predicting another busy year of named storms.
