SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — This season first named system formed early Saturday morning in the Atlantic Ocean. As subtropical storm Ana formed, this became the 7th season in a row to have a storm form before the official start date – June 1st.
Overnight, subtropical storm Ana began to show more tropical characteristics as it now has a tight low-level circulation, small radius of maximum wind, and central convection. This shows Ana has transitioned into our first tropical storm of the season.
As of 5 pm Sunday, tropical Storm Ana has weakened to a tropical depression located about 540 miles northeast of Bermuda. It has maximum sustained winds of 35 mph with wind gusts of 45 mph. The storm is starting to pick up speed as it tracks to the northeast at 14 mph.
While Ana will continue to track to the northeast through the rest of today, the storm is not expected to survive much longer. Ana will be moving over cooler waters, wind shear, and dry air. All these combined will weaken Ana by Monday morning.
