New Advanced Brain + Body Clinic Provides Hope for Treatment-Resistant Depression in Minneapolis Area

MINNEAPOLIS–()–Advanced Brain + Body Clinic (AB+BC) is a new interventional psychiatric clinic opening in Minnetonka, MN. Developed by psychiatrists Stephen Manlove, M.D. and Brian Johns, M.D., this new clinic will focus on helping patients with treatment-resistant depression and PTSD by using cutting-edge treatments that aren’t commonly available. Of the one-in-ten Americans who suffer from depression, 30% of these patients will not respond to medication, often resulting in a cycle of trying several medications without relief. However, Dr. Manlove has found that 70% of patients with treatment-resistant depression report an excellent response to our innovative treatments—ketamine and Esketamine (Spravato) therapy, and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)—particularly when combined with holistic treatment.

“Patients suffering from depression or PTSD, who are not getting relief from drug after drug, require a full-court press approach to get them out of danger and advancing—not just medicated. When we improve overall health by adjusting exercise, diet, and medication, the brain is more responsive to treatment,” said Dr. Manlove. “We think that’s why our patients see such remarkable improvement.”

Ketamine and Spravato work differently than other antidepressants, allowing them to act rapidly to reduce suicidal thoughts. Used for both depression and anxiety, ketamine and Spravato are administered under medical supervision and may be provided through a variety of routes based on patient preference and response. Dr. Johns was involved with some of the groundbreaking research on ketamine and has been using ketamine therapy to treat depression, anxiety, and PTSD for seven years. This new treatment method was approved by the FDA in 2020 to treat suicidal thoughts. Advanced Brain + Body will be one of a few clinics in the Twin Cities to offer patients ketamine treatments paid by insurers in order to make this accessible to the people who need it most.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) has been an FDA-permitted in-office procedure for depression since 2008. Using pulsed magnetic fields similar to an MRI, TMS repairs parts of the brain involved in mood regulation. Because it does not use drugs, TMS is an especially good option for any depression and anxiety sufferers who are pregnant or breast-feeding, concerned about drug interactions, or wish to avoid taking pharmaceuticals. Most insurances cover TMS after the patient has tried four antidepressants without relief.

Dr. Manlove has been using ketamine therapy and TMS in his South Dakota clinic for five years. Patients report feeling better in as little as six weeks; 40% say their depression is in complete remission.

“Our approach is to provide patient-centered care by getting a deep understanding of the patient’s medical history and personal preferences to develop a plan to achieve and maintain optimal brain health,” said Dr. Johns.

Dr. Manlove is board-certified in psychiatry and internal medicine. A graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School, he has 30 years of experience in general psychiatric practice in both inpatient and outpatient settings in Rapid City, SD.

Dr. Brian Johns is a 2009 graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School. He is board-certified in psychiatry and has practiced psychiatry for seven years in the Twin Cities.

Even though depression rates were already high before COVID-19 hit, new stressors caused by the pandemic including unemployment, isolation, and other daily disruptions have compounded with ordinary stressors causing those who suffer from depression and anxiety to reach new peaks. Not only are stress levels high, but there are many new limitations on typical stress mitigation strategies; going to the gym, going out to dinner and visiting friends are no longer an option for the many patients who depend on these activities to curb their stress levels. Offering innovative treatment options, the Advanced Brain + Body team is ready to begin to address this pressing need in the Twin Cities.

Advanced Brain + Body Clinic opens April 6 at Ridgedale Office Center, 13911 Ridgedale Dr., Ste. 110, Minnetonka, MN. Virtual appointments can be scheduled today by calling 612-682-4912 or emailing office@advancedbrainbody.com.
