Depressed after wife’s death in 2020 due to Covid-19, man kills daughter, self

A 36-year-old man allegedly killed his six-year-old daughter becoming dying by suicide in Mumbai. The man was identified as Jitendra Bhadekar.

Bhadekar had reportedly slipped into depression after his wife, Madhavi, succumbed to Covid-19 in June 2020. His family, however, got him remarried in December 2020.

Bhadekar used to work in a diamond company’s back office and lived in Kandivali’s Charkop with his family, which included his daughter, mother, and brothers.

He was found hanging on Sunday in his apartment on the second floor of D’Souza building in Gaothan area of Vile Parle (West).

Bhadekar and his daughter left their Charkop home, informing his family that they were moving to their Vile Parle apartment because the tenants had vacated.

When the father-daughter pair did not return home after hours and phone calls went unanswered, his brother called the neighbours to check on them but to no avail.

The neighbours then called Santa Cruz police, who arrived at the scene and broke the door open to discover them hanging by rope from the ceiling. They were rushed to the nearby hospital, where they were declared brought dead.

Bhadekar left behind a suicide note addressed to his mother saying that he tried everything he could to live but was unable to. He mentioned in the note that he couldn’t leave his daughter behind and was taking her with him.

The note also included his apology and a request for his family to complete the last rites at the same location where his wife was cremated.

Meanwhile, his family said he showed no signs of depression and went to work on a daily basis.
