Approximately 47.5% of women in England with babies aged six months or younger had depression before or after giving birth during the country’s first coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) “lockdown”. Prior to the lockdown, just 23% had postnatal depression. The more contact new mothers had with people, either remotely or face-to-face, the fewer depressive symptoms they reported. Postnatal (also called postpartum) depression is defined as a bout of major depressive disorder which has onset during pregnancy, or within 4 weeks of birth.
