How warm and changing weather can affect your mental health

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - Well, we're finally starting to see some warmer weather. But what can that have to do with your mental health?

Leaders with MercyOne Singing Hills Family Medicine said seasonal depression is a form of hyper mania people can see during the winter months. This can include things like having insomnia, speeling too much, appetite or weight increase and socializing less.

Melissa Levering, a Family Nurse Practitioner at Singing Hills Family Medicine said warm weather can help.

"The big treatment for seasonal depression, the seasonal affective disorder is what we call it, is light therapy. It can be treated with medications, but the warm weather, the sunshine, those are the kinds of things that we see treatment for," said Levering.

The consistently changing weather we've had throughout the month of April can affect seasonal depression as well.

"They go back into hibernation, they tend to be more depressed, more introverted. They have anxiety and sadness. We see a lot of that and the best thing to do is come get treatment because those that are treated are less likely to have a reoccurrence," said Levering.

Levering added exercise and a consistent schedule can help as well.
